Are You Your Thoughts? | What Is The Source of Ego? | Reflections On “The Power Of Now”

I have been reading personal development books for some years now. Last week I picked again the “Power Of Now” by Eckhart Tolle. This time I paid attention to exploring the source of ego and it’s identification with thoughts. Usually we tend to identify thoughts with our ego. This incorrect identification is the source of our pain. In the past I once tried to get rid of my thoughts through meditation. I still meditate, but my purpose is different. Having thoughts is a good thing; however, identifying with our thoughts is not.

Our thoughts are complicated mixtures of all of the influences in our environment and are linked to the collective mind of our culture, society, family, and friends. If we identify with our thoughts, we are witnessing the expression of the ego. As a result of this confusion (I mean this identification with thoughts), we develop the sense of our “I am” from what the thoughts are telling us. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the following whispers in our head: “You are a failure, bad things always happen to you, you are stupid.” Blah blah blah.

Well, when this internal dialog takes over your mind, you start having very low self-esteem and a bad opinion of yourself. This is because you believed your thoughts. As a result they got planted deep into your head.

When we are born, we are like a blank sheet of paper. Family, school, and society start writing things on this blank sheet. At the age of 7, we become the fully developed sum of all of our thoughts because at this age these thoughts become our beliefs. We have absolutely no say in this! The more we believe our thoughts as we age, the deeper they get lodged in our minds and the stronger our identification with the big story of ours.

In many cases people are bonded with hostile “thought entities.  These entities are verbally abusive and start making your mind believe the stories they tell. They are perpetually attacking either you or others. Have you blamed someone else for being … (fill in the blank)? Did you tell them who they actually were? Me too… The thoughts entities actually love projecting onto others. There is a saying:

We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are.

What Is The Source of Ego?

“Think outside the box”. What is the box? Well, it’s the identification with your thoughts! Your poisonous thoughts take all the space in your head. Feels tight! This is the unconscious conditioning with the heavy ego.  Identification with thought creates our self-prison. Who would have thought!

So how do we break free? Breaking free from the ego means breaking free from identification with thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. Step back a little and create a space inside. This space is called presence. Now you know that you are not your thoughts. You are the awareness in which your thoughts come and go…  This is the end of the ego and the beginning of awakening.

If you have a limiting belief from your childhood, your unique perception of reality becomes selective. You become extremely aware of the thing you believe in. If you believe that you are not deserving of any good thing, your reality actually attracts more negative “not deserving” things. If you believe that people are bad, more bad people will show up in your life. You attract them!

Are Thoughts The Source of Ego? Talk by Echart Tolle – simple and elegant exploration of our suffering.

Let us get practical. If you decide to start a new online business and have a belief that you are not good enough, your thought process might go like this:  “If I fail, my self-image will be injured; therefore, I am not even going to try.” Not taking action has to do with deriving your identity from thinking. Even the thought of “I have failed” is a lie. “I am a failure” is even a greater lie.

Here is another way to look at failure: “I have learned something here. I have more experience and knowledge as a result of this failure; therefore, I am succeeding! “

Never believe the lies that your mind produces. Many people live with very hostile and abusive minds. Often it serves as motivation to get out and set themselves free. The beginning of freedom is when we realize that all problems are mind generated, but not world generated.

Hi Margarita,
We are so complicated. I think what you’re saying here is if we hold onto the limiting beliefs we have about ourselves we cannot move beyond a certain point.
I’m reading an interesting book right now called the Emotion Code.
Dr Nelson Bradley developed this theory that our subconscious mind holds onto negative emotional stress. This stress is something we don’t even realize is there it could be from anytime in our life even from the womb.
One day we wake up and find out we have a pain or an autoimmune dz. According to Dr Bradley the negative energy in our bodies will begin to attack our body and cause all kinds of physical as well as emotional problems.

I’ve seen the results in a friend who was able to release her life long emotional imprint she acquired as a 3 year old child and has affected her whole life via phobias.

She had a few sessions that identified these emotions, what age they occured and what part of the body they affected…The practitioner helped her release them. She has a new lease on life and most of her phobias are gone…truly amazing…..You might be interested in the book.
Thanks for pushing the envelope to bring forth these fascinating subjects.
Have a great weekend,
Tonya

Hi Tonya,
thank you for your comment. It is easy to know that we are not our thought. However, I forget it all the time. So may be 15 minutes into the story I catch myself and pull back.

Complication comes from being so involved with the story, because it seems to be so real.

I checked the book! Thank you for that. I ordered it right away.

Hi Margarita,

I’m really sorry for being late here as I was in bed sick for few days dear.

You have made a strong point dear :) “You are a failure, bad things always happen to you, you are stupid.” ~ I used to hear that from my friends eventhough they have everything they need compared to a homeless poor children.

I really disagree with “bad things always happen to you” and kind of phrases, and then I think that he / she might have never experienced someone going through extremely bad situations at all. People die without water and food at one side of the World, but someone cries because he couldn’t get the favorite drink just for today?

Sometimes I recommend meditation for ‘em and eventhough it’s a practice comes with their religion, they ask “WHAT? Are you kidding?”.

However I feel the idea behind that kind of thoughts is being selfish and wanting all the good stuff happening for ‘em Margarita. When a friend of mine keep repeating such phrases and share ‘em all over her facebook wall everyday, I’ve asked her to visit a small place where poor people live. Gladly, she did. Now she looks at the World with a bit more broader view. Sometimes you need to experience that by yourself to change your perspectives. Isn’t it? :) We all need a break for our ego.

You have a wonderful weekend there :)

Cheers…

Dear Mayura,

I realized that really people like being miserable. Why? Because it is familiar. This is why if you come up with a new idea, does not matter if it is good. It will be rejected and you will be ridiculed. But the history has been created by people who followed their crazy ideas and implemented those into reality.

It was smart of you to tell your friend to see this place, which put her in a place of gratitude. You know it .

Hey Margarita,

I thought that The Power Of Now was one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read. Through this I learned more about what the ego really is and how people relate to it so much. Through Echart’s teachings is how I learned to stay more in the present moment. It was such an eye opener for me and I think a must read for everyone really if you’d like to understand more about how the mind really works.

Through his teachings I’ve been able to learn how to quiet my mind more and I did do some meditation for awhile. I kind of got away from it because I’m at a place in my life that I have conversations with God and I’m truly at peace during this time and from what I know about meditation, that’s the whole reason you do it in the first place so I’m there already.

If we can all understand where our own limited beliefs come from and why then that’s the first step to getting on the right path. Thank you for sharing this and for the video as well. You always make me think when I stop by here.

Enjoy your week Margarita.

Hi Adrienne,

To quiet the mind and be able to connect with our true voice is a must. Few realize it though. The faster we go, the more we get caught into the hamster wheel. Slowing down and feeling the moment of now is our getaway to freedom.

Thank you, Adrienne! Be well.
