How To Start Your Business Year With A Bang
The end goal of your business is to make sales, but the game of sales has changed dramatically. We are now competing on a global level. Customers are getting more sophisticated when it comes to buying, and they are continuously exposed to an overwhelming amount of information, which makes it difficult for you to stand out to them.
What are the most important qualities of a business person? In life, I consider all people being in sales. In life we do this on a regular basis: get married, make friends, get a job. What are the success attributes and sales strategies we all have to develop and nurture? Where do we start?
1. The most important quality of a successful businessman is self-discipline, which is the ability to stay committed. Jim Rohn has a saying: “We plant in spring but harvest in fall”. Understand that it takes time to get results. You must be patient, working on your inner garden.
2. The new business acumen became the new sales acumen. You have to develop situational knowledge. Clients perceive the sales person on a new level. You are not a sales person anymore but a business partner. You become a part of their management team.
Can you lose a deal on a price?
Often sales people think that they can lose a deal on a price. They tell themselves the lie that if an item or service is expensive, it cannot sell easily. The discrepancy comes from failing to differentiate between the price and cost. You are responsible for translating the price into cost. If everything else is equal, the customer will buy for the lowest price. As a sales person, this is your job to capture this higher price and to prove that is worth paying for it. If you really lost on price, it means that your skills suck. It means that you were not able to distinguish yourself from your competitor. They won because they did something different than you.

It is also wrong to assume that sales people can do away with the phone. Social media has not replaced the need to pick up the phone and call. Even cold-calling still works. Both social media and cellular communication have to be in your toolbox, but you decide which one to use depending on the client.
In sales the most important question to ask yourself is how to create value. There are 4 stages in this process.
1. The very lowest value you can offer is having a great product. There is nothing wrong with this, but it’s just the starting point.
2. The next level of creating value is selling a great experience, support, and service. Some examples of businesses functioning at this level are Disney World, Starbucks, etc. This level is about value proposition.
3. The third level is about value creation. You create measurable business results, which translate into increased revenue, decreased costs, and improved profits. Many competitors play at this level, too. Hence your goal is to differentiate yourself even further.
4. Level 4 is about the strategic level of value. This is what clients really expect from sales people right now. You bring your clients new ideas and help them see around corners. On this level you have to do some of client’s thinking for them.
The assumption that clients know their business better than sales people do is not true. They just don’t. High end clients have a very special requirement for the sales person: “Bring me ideas.” They don’t know what they don’t know. You are creating a value for the client. You are the carrier of the next business initiative that will move their business forward. You become a part of their management team. You become a business partner. This approach will give you a new title, which is their solution provider.

Hi Margarita!
Great points you have brought up in this article. I find that persistence is the key. So many people leave the market because they lose patience. I like where you quoted ““We plant in spring but harvest in fall”
Says it all Marquita.

Donna, thank you for stopping by.
Yes, there are moments of desperation and desire to quit. The stretch is often painful. The mastery is to stay regardless. I have quit many times. So I know from personal experience. The old programming is kicking hard, threatened by the upcoming change. it does not care that it is for the better. So, we better decide who is in charge.

Hi Margarita – some very interesting thoughts. I love the idea of being a ‘business partner’ rather than a ‘seller’ – I’m much more likely to buy from someone when they treat me with respect and talk to me as if I’m on their level. You trust people when you feel they’re working ‘with’ you, to help you get what you need, rather than just trying to make a sale out of you.
It’s all about relationships, in the end.
Another thought-provoking post – thank you!

Sue,
thank you for your comment. It is all about how we “feel” about someone. Even a simple conversation, may be just “Hi” is better than saying nothing. The short greeting can be a difference between getting the business or not. Yes, you are right. It is all about relationships.
Also, giving comes first. Then the receiving follows.

Hey Margarita,
Wonderful post as always, you knock em dead every time girl.
I use to hate being called a salesman. I’ve heard so many times online that we aren’t sales people but you know what! That’s a lie. We are selling ourselves so as many times as we’d like to ignore that, it’s the truth.
So how will we he able to do that? Like you said, add value and I guess I never realized there could be so many different steps to the process but they all make perfect sense. I had another aha moment reading this so I want to thank you for that.
Keep them coming Margarita! Enjoy your week.

Adrienne,
you are right. We are selling ourselves. In order to sell the product, we have to like it first. We come again to the starting point, which for many of us is self acceptance. We have a lot of “looking in the mirror” to do.

Hey Margarita,
It’s a bit difficult for me to add something new to a business article such like this one (since I’m only an IT guy after all) but I think that being a “solution provider” is where the money is at.
I’ve been asked many times how can people make money online and the answer is very simple:
If you offer something that people need or want (whatever it is) then that’s a market you can profit from.
It really doesn’t get any simpler than that.

thank you for stopping by. I was impressed by the quality of technical information you offer on your site. And yes, it is all about solving other people’s problems. You put it right: offer something that people want. Very simple.

Hi Margarita,
Excellent sharing, especially the part about the skills involved to allow the customers to see the value in the products. The price will always be too high if the benefits of using the products cannot be communicated to the potential customer effectively.
Like Sue, I also love the idea of a ‘business partner’. When I do cold calls to small business owners, I mentioned that I am looking for good quality people for a project. The idea of collaboration must be communicated as our potential business partners would like to see what THEY can benefit in joining us.
Wondering sharing, as always, Margarita. Thanks!

Viola,
you got it just right. The higher skill is to let the customers see the value of your product / service. We have to start with ourselves. Liking and appreciating ourselves. Then others will follow.
Thank you!

Hi Margarita,
Another great informative post.
When you said that the client says “bring me ideas” it really resonated with me. I have many clients (for my freelance writing biz) that are totally relating on my ideas for article topics, eBook formatting, what the sales page should be focusing on, etc… People don’t always know what they want. They just have a rough idea, and are counting on you to guide them.
Results don’t happen overnight, indeed. That’s another thing that lots of newbies have a hard time to understand and I’ve seen so many drop outs because of the lack of such basic and vital understanding. Thank you for the reminder.
As always, thank you for contributing to the great blogging world

Sylviane,
this is another niche market to be filled. You are absolutely on the spot when you say that people do not know what they want. You tell them, you offer them your thoughts and ideas. Then you will be their partner for life.
Thank you for your insight!

Hi Margarita,
Thanks for another great informative post.
I don’t know what to add as you covered it all. I like what you have to say: “The most important quality of a successful businessman is self-discipline, which is the ability to stay committed”. Yes, patience is a virtue here and the wait is the hardest of all but we have to work in the inner garden as you put it.
And Yes, it is all about relationships, and leading with value is key. Thanks for the reminder.
Thanks for sharing such a great post Margarita!

well, self discipline is the tough one. many people, including me, do things sporadically and then quit. I am very careful now not to find excuses for procrastination. People see everything, so they will appreciate self discipline and always following up. Great comment!

Hi Margarita,
Great post as always!
Business Schools teachs us 4P’s of marketing but in present context on Social media we are left with 2P’s only that is Product and promotion, that is all we have been doing.
In blogging or any product selling it all boils down to USP and core competency, how we can differentiate and what value we can provide as Business partners is the key.
Thanks for great info shared.

Sapna,
I like the expression “core competency”. This is the foundation of self esteem and value. Out of those 2, promotion is more important to me. Because does not matter what you have, if no one knows about it, the business is doomed to failure.
I am thinking about memes, this is the “virus of the mind”. Good meme is how fast and wide it spreads. Promotion is the answer. And, of course, quality.

Hi Margarita,
I too love the Jim Rohn saying Plant in the Spring and Harvest in the Fall!
What a great man he was.
What I got from this post was that we need to give more value to our customers. There are some ways we can do that on the internet as I noticed the other day one of our marketers was offering “One to One” attention to those who wanted to join her marketing system.
I just love that! Great idea and marketing.
We must be creative to find the things that will work for us in this global market.
Thank you so much for sharing this thought provoking post.

Hi Margarita,
Love when you say “You must be patient, working on your inner garden.”. Absolutely there are numerous businesses just covering the cost but not making profits. Some may just leave it and go for another. Patience is something they are lacking of and thinking of acheiving att at once.
The value is always matters, no?
Many businesses focused in creating value but I see they are not using strategies while embracing the change towards their business. As you said, they are always solution providers, so they need to be one without keeping their customers unhappy.
Have a successful week dear
Cheers…
