Bringing Out the Best in People | How To Find Joy in Helping Others Succeed | Book Review

How this tiny book Bringing Out the Best in People written in 1985 can make a huge impact on your life, leadership skills, and the World…

The most famous and successful leaders have one thing in common. They are able to bring the best in others. They can always bring some “extra mile” and inspire their followers. Let me correct myself. Those leaders do not have followers. In reality their followers are future leaders.  The best leaders are not the most intelligent and skilled professionals. But they possess the powers to inspire and motivate others. Leadership of this kind is the most sought for commodity in the world.

I have been always curious about the relationship between parents and their children. For example, your teenage son has difficulty getting up early on a school day.  However, on the weekend, he can get up at 3am to go on a fishing trip. Why is that? Different people are motivated by different things. This is why every business person, who wants his employees to perform well, has to be a psychologist.

Here is my “video book review” on Bringing Out the Best in People by Alan Loy McGinnis:

I have learned many golden nuggets on leadership from the book “Bringing out the Best in People” by Alan Loy McGinnis. Here is something I was very surprised to realize.

If a “rank-and-file” worker is to be promoted, his technical skills are 90% of importance. For supervising positions, the technical skills and people skills are equally important. For promotions on executive levels and higher, the technical expertise is 20% of importance and human relations are 80%. Interesting… So you can become a CEO of a company without having in depth technical skills. However, there are many skilled professionals to advise you as the CEO on different topics.

My understanding is that leaders are able to draw masterfully from other people’s resources. Best leaders understand human behaviors rather than being experts in technical details of particular specialty. I like the comparison in the book that a great leader and motivator will make it to the final line first, if competing with a genius. The ability to bring enthusiasm is the greatest asset in the world.

Here are the most important rules for becoming a leader and motivator according to Alan Loy McGinnis:

  1. Expect the best from people you lead.

  2. Make a thorough study of the other person’s needs.

  3. Establish high standards for excellence.

  4. Create an environment where failure is not fatal.

  5. If they are going anywhere near where you want to go, climb on other people’s bandwagons.

  6. Employ models to encourage success.

  7. Recognize and applaud achievement.

  8. Employ a mixture of positive and negative reinforcement.

  9. Appeal sparingly to the competitive urge.

  10. Place a premium on collaboration.

  11. Build into the group an allowance for storms.

  12. Take steps to keep your own motivation high.

The final chapter of the book is titled: “Why helping other people grow can become Life’s greatest joy”. The only way to get what you want is helping other people get what they want.  Thing this is a quote by Zig Ziglar.
