Everyone Communicates Few Connect | The Inspiration Equation | How To Lead People To Take Inspired Action

Have you ever wondered why you make donations to certain charities and do not pay attention to others? Do you know why some of the teachers are loved by the students and some are not even respected? I always knew who my daughter’s best teacher was. I did not have to meet them or know them personally. I knew the teacher’s skills by the way my daughter felt about them. The student performance always has strong correlation with the inspirational qualities of the teacher.

A great teacher is also a great leader. Here is the formula for inspiring people invented by John C. Maxwell and shared in his book Everyone Communicates Few Connect.” He calls it inspiration equation and works like this:

What They Know + What They See + What They Feel = Inspiration

  • I. What people need to know is not information. They need to know if you care about them and they can trust you.

1.1.    You listeners need to know that you understand them. You think about their needs, not about yours. People do things for their reasons. It is helpful to ask yourself the following questions:

1.1.1. What are they thinking? What are their dreams, values, culture, and thoughts? A real leader and teacher listen first and then shares insights.

1.1.2. What are they saying? True leaders are good listeners. The follow the pattern: listen, learn and lead. Listen to what they say, how they say it and what they don’t say.

1.1.3.  What are they doing? What are their activities, body language and energy levels?

1.2.    Your audience needs to know that you as a leader have high expectations of them. People in general perform up to the level of expectation we have on them. It is the same for parents and children. Be willing to believe and expect that people are capable of greatness. “Management is about persuading people to do things they do not want to do, while leadership is about inspiring people to do things they never thought they could” ~ Steve Jobs. People want enthusiasm not skepticism. People also need encouragement more than they need an expertise.

  • II. What people need to see so they can continue listening or stop paying attention? The first impression is made for the first 7 seconds and begins at a surface level. They pay attention at how you are groomed and dressed. If you smile or not.

2.1.    People need to see your conviction. You have to deeply believe in what you have to say. If you as a speaker do not have knowledge and assurance about the topic, the listeners will sense it and will not believe you.

2.2.    People need to see evidence of your character. When you present your character can your audience trust you? Are you living your message?  Are you doing what you preach? Here is a good example: a mediocre teacher tells, a good teacher explains and a great teacher demonstrates.

2.3.    People need to see your credibility. They will always give the benefit of the doubt as long as your reputation and credentials are good. As a leader and speaker you have to maintain your credibility over time. This is not a one time deal.

  • III. What people need to feel? People might not remember what you said or did, but they remember how you made them feel.

3.1.    People need to feel your passion for the message and them. Vision must be strengthened by passion. Martin Luther King Jr. did not say “I have a plan”. He rather proclaimed “I have a dream!” Vision without passion is like a picture without possibilities

3.2.    People need to feel your confidence in yourself and them. Inspiration comes when people believe that they can do what you do. If the speaker is unsecured and nervous the audience will feel the same. In general, you cannot give what you don’t have.

3.3.    People need to feel your gratitude for them. You appreciate that people are willing to give you their attention and time. Gratitude has to be expressed, not kept a secret. Let the people know how much you appreciate them.

When you put this formula to work, the result is an inspired action. How people come to the moment of inspiration? You have to be able to say the right words at the right time and give people an action plan. Many when they hear some facts, they say: “I already know this”. But knowing does not do the job. The knowledge does not mean that you are ready to follow through. A precise and simple action plan helps people not only feel good but do good. In other words people are ready to move from “know how” to “do now”. Specific steps are based on the following action plan: ACT.

  • A – put the letter A beside things you learned you have to apply

  • C – Put the letter C beside thing you learned you have to change

  • T – put the letter T beside things you learned you have to teach

Hi Margarita,

I’ve not read this particular book by John but boy I should. I 100% agree with what you’ve just shared here from his teachings.

Not that I’m at the level of the people you mentioned here like in Fortune 500 companies and such but I know that when I pick up the phone and call my prospects they are more open to me in general. The last conversation I had as you know, I just introduce myself and let them know that I’m willing to help them if they need it. I asked her if she needed anything and after she said not now then I asked her what she was involved in.

That started the conversation and come to find out she’s almost finished with her membership site and by the end of the conversation she has invited me to be one of her coaches and she’s eager to promote my product when it’s finished.

Why?

All because I told her I was there for her and could I help her in any way. It’s not about me it’s about helping others. She became interested in what I do and my areas of expertise so why not support each other and work together right.

What a great message Margarita, thank you so much for sharing this one. I’m definitely going to have to put that book on my list.

Have a great afternoon.

Dear Adrienne,

very powerful example of solving problems and caring for people. It really matters. Now this comes to mind: Seek firs to understand before be understood. By legendary Steven Covey. Exactly. You understood her problem, solved it and you got her trust. Beautiful!
